A PERCEPTIVE SHADOW
As a follow up to yesterday’s post on Perception, here I go again… as I lay in bed, listening to the same music that got me writing on Sunday evening, I suddenly sat down, switched on the light, grabbed a pen and a sticker to write what had just popped up in my head. The funny thing with perception is that whatever you do and wherever you are, it is there with you. You cannot loose it… it is shadowing your every move and thought.
I talked music yesterday, because I needed to be light, gentle and not too deep… but I barely scratched the surface, so I’ll try unveiling a little more than just the comfort zone this time. Before I do that, however, I’d like to share my sticker:
Being a writer/storyteller is trying to bring the reader as close as possible to ones own perception of the world - whether it'd be real or made-up.
The thing is, we are all doing exactly that everyday by attempting to understand one another… or more justly said, one another’s realities. Perception is not only that of the senses and it could be one of the reasons it is so difficult to totally grasp – or master. There are also many factors that can hinder us, like the world itself or more accurately, life. A hinder, however, is not an impossibility… no matter how you are perceiving reality.
As an avid reader, I love fantasy stories that have a foot in “reality”… probably because it is partly the easiest way to relate but also – I believe – it keeps a door opened to ones own interpretation. How redundant do I sound right now? I could delete and rephrase, but I am going to leave it that way.
You can explain why Joe Rowling has written the Harry Potter’s series as she did, criticize and point your finger at what you disagree with… ultimately, you won’t be close to understanding her truth if you don’t get her reality at the time of her writing. But as I said yesterday, why would you want to do that anyway? You can, however, relate in such a manner that is satisfactory to your own world and set of perception.
Mankind is no lone wolf… we need one another to live a full life. It does not mean that we are going to like it all the time though, but it is an universal truth. Such a truth is consequently applicable to the three personality types talked about in the Wakefield Doctrine… yes, I am on about this again, because it is a crucial tool if you understand it – of course. Let’s try and make it very simple by answering to this question:
How does a clark, a roger and a scott perceive the world? ... that is the first question the doctrine is asking, after the explanation of the existence of three distinct personality types.
At the Wakefield Doctrine, we used to say:
Clarks think... Rogers feel... Scotts act...
Very well, how does that help to understand the perception they have of the world? I am not going to paraphrase my colleague, you can have a look-it at the description of each personality type on the doctrine’s blog (makes for an interesting and probably entertaining read… especially if you’re a clark, like me). Still… it does really tell me how each type perceives the world…
This is a challenge of course, because – hihihi – I have no answer to give you to the main question. In other words, the simplicity lies in the idea that the answer to the question would make it very easy to get it… an answer that we do not have yet… I can say this, however, understand the behaviour and you’ll know from which planet a Clark, a Roger or a Scott is… My problem with that is: the doctrine says understand how they perceive the world and you’ll know which personality type you are confronting… so far, I have yet to read about the named perception… what I read was only about three behaviours / personality types.
Why bother? seriously? what else do you have to do anyway? I still haven’t scratched more than the surface – or made it any simpler – but as we agreed on, we understand as we go… I have not found a reason why not to bother… besides, I don’t have to justify my rumbling about something I believe in, so here you have it friends.
For the unaware reader: being part of the doctrine is being part of a living thing… quest… creature. Questioning its principles in all possible ways will undoubtedly help its comprehension but also the “doctriners” (as I call us) to develop ways to explain it even better.
